Question asked:

I INTEND TO GROW WATERMELON IN KITENGELA.WHAT INFORMATION CAN YOU GIVE ME CONCERNING THE SOIL AND CLIMATE REQUIREMENTS.ANY OTHER NECESSARY INFORMATION.

Answer:

Melons (sweet melon & water melon) like warm to hot conditions and grow well under irrigation. They grow well at elevations up to 1500 m. Plants can be sown in small plastic pots in a nursery or in nursery beds, and transplanted when 16 cm high. They can also be direct sown. Seed can be sown in the field direct on mounds or on ridges. The planting distance is 3m x 2m. Water melon grows well in sandy loam soils with soil reaction (pH) between 5.8 and 7.2. It is advisable to do soil fertility evaluation analysis in order to obtain appropriate fertilizer recommendations. KARI-Land Resources and Analytical Services at KARI-Kabete National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) offers soil testing services for fertility purposes at a small cost. KARI-Kabete is located on Waiyaki Way next to Nairobi school in Nairobi.
