There is a rising demand for livestock products in developing countries that is propelled by income and population growth as well as urbanization.  Trends in the human population in Nairobi city and the number of animals slaughtered to supply meat in Nairobi are investigated.  A household survey is carried out in 4 districts of the city to investigate meat consumption behaviour in relation to income levels.  The population in Nairobi city is growing exponentially but this growth is not matched by similar trends in number of animals’ slaughtered (cattle, goats and sheep) to provide the meat needs of the city population.  Consumers in the city seem to prefer beef for consumption at home because it is cheaper per unit and can be cooked in a variety of dishes as an accompaniment.  The chevon (goat meat) and mutton (sheep meat) is more preferred as a ceremonial food as well as a delicacy during outings (dining away from home) either as roasted meat (Nyama choma), fried or boiled meat.  This discrepancy in trends of human population growth and livestock supply may lead to meat shortages in the future, triggering, high prices for meats and vulnerability of the consumers unless the livestock industry is developed to facilitate an increasing trend in the supply of livestock to Nairobi and similar urban areas in Kenya that matches the human population growth trend.
