The paper descibes the role of the Kenya Agricultural Research Insitute in meeting the challenges of food security through the reseach and technology developments. Agricultural research is the backbone of the Kenyan agricultural sector. While a modest amount of agricultural research is conducted at the national universities, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the private sector, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARl) remains the principal agricultural research institute. Established in 1979 through the amendment of the Science and Technology Amendment Act, its vision is to be an institute of excellence in agricultural research and technology transfer contributing to improved quality of life for all Kenyans.
