Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute research proposals and budgets 1995/96

General objectives of KARI, to generate technologies for improving the quality and quantity of crops grown for both income and food, hence ensure food securiy, adequate nutrition and continued supply of high quality export and agro-industries. Other objectives to improve and diversify the agricultural export base and to contribute to import substitution; to improve living standards of the people through better returns to labour and increased incomes. The research mandate of KARI: Coffee - Robusta coffee, Arabica coffee, cocoa, oil palm and tea; Bananas - Cooking, dessert and beer; Vegetables - tomato, onion, cabbage, French beans, Egg plant and indigenous vegetables; Fruit - mangoes, avocados, citrus, pawpaws, pineapple, passion fruits, other horticultural crops like spices, flowers and ornamental and essential oil crops; Soils and Soil management - Maintenance of soil fertility and environment; Postharvest - reduction of postharvest losses, drudgery and value addition to products
