The Thika Research Centre is Central Province. It is located
at an altitude of 1548 m, latitude of 0o59' N and longitude
of 37o04' E. The mean annual rainfall is 911 mm; the mean
annual evaporation rate 1623 mm. The soil types according
to the FAO/UNESCO classification are Nitisols, Acrisols,
Gleysols and Combisols, Kandiustults, Plinthustults, Hydraquents
and Ustrochrepts according to the USDA classification.
The centre's mandate is to conduct and co-ordinate research
activities on crops, including fruits, vegetables and flowers.
This research entails breeding and testing of high-yield
and high quality horticultural crops, development of improved
crop production technologies and appropriate pest/disease
control strategies (including IPM), and development of appropriate
cropping systems. Research conducted and co-ordinated at
the centre includes vegetables, fruits, macadamia nuts,
herbs and spices, flowers, etc.
