The Perkerra Research Centre is in Baringo District, Rift
Valley Province, at an altitude of 1067 m, latitude 0o28'
N, and longitude 35o51' E. Mean annual rainfall is 654 mm.
Mean annual evaporation is 2040 mm. The soil types are Eutric
Fluvisols, Calcaric Fluvisols, saline and sodic phase and
Vertic Fluvisols.
The centre's mandate is to improve agricultural productivity
in the farming systems in Rift Valley Province and to develop
applied and on-farm research, and crop production packages
for selected crops through adaptive methods. The centre
collaborates with the national research programmes in the
introduction of suitable breed of animals for meat and dairy
production. It also liaises with national research programmes
to introduce suitable crop varieties besides diversifying
their production systems and maximising the return on investment.
RRC-Perkerra undertakes the economic analysis of the existing
and improved farming practices, while demonstrating these
to farmers and extension personnel.
The centre's other mandate is to evolve evolving an effective
system of scientific communication with national and international
research organisations and other relevant institutions.
Research programmes co-ordinated or conducted by the centre
are soil and water management, crop improvement and production,
pasture and fodder production, animal improvement and production,
agro-socioeconomic and research-extension links.
