The National Agricultural Research Laboratories
(NARL-Kabete) is in Nairobi, at an altitude of
1700 m, latitude of 1°15' N, and longitude
of 36° 41'E. The mean annual rainfall is 1295
mm. The mean annual evaporation is 1748 mm. The
soil types are Nitisols (FAO/UNESCO classification)
and Ultisols (USDA classification).
The centre's mandate is to carry the national
responsibility for research and advisory services
on soil and water management and crop protection.
The research programmes conducted at the centre
are soil fertility and plant nutrition programme,
the Kenya soil survey, crop protection programme
and socioeconomics programme.
The centre also hosts the KARI Biotechnology
Centre, a newly established Biotrasformation Centre
in KARI. Its mandate is to carry out modern biotechnology
research and application aimed at developing,
testing and packaging novel animal recombinant
vaccines, plant and animal molecular-based disease
diagnostic tests and crop varieties with novel
traits for resistance and tolerance to biotic
and abiotic stresses. Evaluation, packaging and
transfer of developed technologies to end-users
is conducted in conjunction with key stakeholders
in national and regional research centres while
observing the requisite biosafety requirements.
