Infection and Treatment Method (ITM) of controlling ECF

The most common method of controlling East Coast Fever (ECF) and other tick- borne diseases is by dipping or spraying with chemicals that will kill ticks (acaricide-eg Almatix, Triatix, Stelladone). This is very effective if done well, once weekly.

The Muguga North Research Centre is in Kiambu District, Central Province, at an altitude of 2096 mm, latitude 1o 13'S, and longitude 36o38'E. The mean annual rainfall is 2096m and the mean annual evaporation is 1716 mm.

The centre's mandate is conduct applied and basic research and to develop cost-effective diagnostic tests and control measures of livestock diseases, and transfer of technology related to tick-borne diseases, viral, helminth, mycoplasmal and bacterial diseases of livestock.
Research activities conducted by the centre aim at disease pathogenesis, transmission and pathology, and transferring technologies to users through various uptake pathways.
