The Muguga South Research Centre is in Kiambu District,
Central Province, at an altitude of 2095 m, latitude 36°34-36°
39'S, and longitude1°11'-14'E, The mean annual rainfall
is 946 mm and the mean annual evaporation rate is 1715 mm.
The soil types are Nitisol according to FAO/UNESCO classification,
and Alfisols according to USDA classification.
The centre's mandate is to carry out studies on soil and
water management in the high-and medium-potential areas;
to investigate all facets of resource inventory, development,
management and utilisation of factors of il and water conservation
and crop production.
Other mandates ate to develop safe crop protection methods;
develop and co-ordinated basic, strategic and applied research
in biological control; conduct research on ruminants and
evaluate animal feed resources with special emphasis on
nutritional requirements, efficiency and performance of
dairy cattle. Others include conducting basic and applied
research in plant genetics and physiology for priority crops;
to provide plant introduction and post-entry quarantine
services nationally.
Research programmes conducted or co-ordinated by the centre
include the soil and water conservation programme, the crop
protection programme, the animal production programme, the
plant genetics and physiology programme, plant introduction
and quarantine services, and the socio-economics and biometrics
programme. The centre's regional mandate covers Kiambu,
Thika, Muranga and Greater Nairobi.
