The Marsabit Research Centre is in Eastern Province,
at an altitude of 2324 m, latitude 1°40'3°N,
and longitude 36°40'E. The mean annual rainfall
is 300 mm, for Marsabit, 800 mm for Mount Marsabit,
the mean annual evaporation rate is 2500 mm. The soil
types are Basalt and Colluvium from volcanic rocks.
The centre's has the mandates for implementing programmes in support of agricultural development in nine districts in North Eastern Province with a total land area of 31.9 million ha including 24.7 million ha of agricultural land. Besides the facility at Marsabit, the centre is assisted in its efforts by sub-centres/field stations at Garrissa, Gudas, Kargi, Ngurunit, Ghatab, Mt. Kulal, Korr and Olturot.
KARI Marsabit conduct's research on arid
lands, to improve agricultural production systems
in Marsabit, Turkana, Wajir and Mandera Districts.
The research programmes conducted or co-ordinated by
the centre are soil and water management, range resource
management and ecology and production, and socioeconomics.
