The Research Centre is in Machakos District, Eastern
Province, at and altitude of 1575 m, latitude1 35' Sand
longitude 37 14'E. The mean annual rainfall is 718mm.
The soil types according to FAO/UNSCO classification are
Chromic Luvisols.
The research programmes co-ordinated or conducted in
the station are the national soil and water programme,
the national maize research programe for semi-arid lands,
the national root and tuber research programme, the national
grain legume programme and national small ruminant programme.
The centre regional mandate is to improve agriculture
production in Kajiado, Kitui, Machakos and Mwingi districts.
