The Kakamega Research Centre is in Western Province at
an altitude of 1585 m, latitude 0° 16'N and longitude
34° 45'E. The mean annual rainfall is 1995 mm. The
mean annual evaporation is 1770 mm. The soils are deep,
friable, Basaltic loam, fertile and well drained.
The centre's mandate is to promote agricultural production
through development and dissemination of appropriate technologies
in Bungoma, Busia, Butere-Mumias, Kakamenga, Lugari, Mount
Elgon, Teso, and Vihiga districts of Western Province,
a total land area of about 10 000 km2 and a population
of 4.2 million people. Alupe in Teso district serves as
a subcentre.
Research progammes conducted or coordinated by the centre
are on finger millet and sorghum, animal production, horticulture,
oil crops programme, bean, root and tuber crops programme,
striga management and soil management.
