Research Fund
The Agricultural Research Fund (ARF)
was established in 1990 as a discrete entity in KARI to
serve as a major mechanism for promoting and facilitating
collaboration between public and private sector institutions
in both the funding and execution of agricultural research.
The ARF became operational in July 1991, with initial
funding from the United States Agency for International
Development (USAID).
Purpose
Sustainable funding mechanisms established (refer to output
8 of KARI 's main logframe MTIP Document).

Draw upon the comparative advantage
of a wide range of institutions both in public and
private sectors to contribute to implementation of
priority national agricultural research projects.

Contribute to developing an environment
that promotes and expands opportunities for innovative
research by scientists in both public and private
sectors with an element of competition based on capacity
and ability.

Achieve greater synergies and
cost-effectiveness by enhancing teamwork and collaboration
between scientists in public and private institutions,
and by fostering greater participation of stakeholders
in formulating and funding of proposals.

Broaden the participation of the
private sector in supporting research and development
in commercial agricultural commodities.

Promote stronger linkages between
research and tertiary agricultural training to enhance
the quality and relevance of training, particularly
at post-graduate level.
