Research technologies adapted by Perkerra research centre
Kari Perkerra is situated in Marigat Township of Baringo district. Since its establishment the centre has grown from just offering extension advisory services to developing as well as disseminating agricultural technologies for the surrounding farming communities
The research mandate of KARI Perkerra involves conducting adaptive and applied research in collaboration with extension, farmers and other stakeholders to improve agricultural production in 6 mandated districts of Baringo, Koibatek, Keiyo, Samburu, Marakwet and Laikipia. The total land area of the 6 mandate districts is 4.4 million ha of which 3.7 million ha can be classified as agricultural land and 67% ASAL. According to 1999 census the mandate region is inhabited by 1.2 million people constituting 231,304 households. The principal agricultural enterprises ranked in decreasing order of importance are maize, dairy, goats, beef, irish potatoes, wheat and apiculture/horticulture
In Implementing its research agenda the centre conducts on station and on farm Research under rainfed and irrigated conditions. The research agenda is focused on addressing the farming challenges affecting crops and livestock production systems.
Currently the centre is implementing 28 research projects within 8 broad programmes. [more....]
