Molo Commercial Activities
Eucalyptus grandis
This project was started in 2002 and 2003. A total of 114,000 fast growing Eucalyptus grandis seedlings were purchased for the centre by KARI. The seedlings were planted at Molo and Marindas farm on 150 acres. The expected revenue from this project is about KES 50,000,000.
Barley
This is a joint project between Kari and Kenya Malting Limited. The KML provide the seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and foliar feed while Kari provides land and meet costs of land preparation, planting, spraying and harvesting. The area planted this year at Marindas is 50 acres. The expected revenue is KES 750,000
Maize
Fifteen acres was planted with maize at Molo farm 2010. The main aim of this project is to contribute to the country’s food security. The expected revenue is KES 200,000.
Sheep
Molo is widely known for the molo lamb mutton. Lack of good breeding stock constrains farmers in keeping pace with the high demand for quality mutton. The project was started with an aim of providing farmers high quality breeding stock. The Hampshire Down breed was chosen because of its fast growth rate, high quality mutton and is popular with farmers. To meet this objective the flock will be raised to 250.
