Our Mandate
The Centre was established in 1969 and assigned national responsibility of undertaking range research on constraints that affect rangeland productivity.  This encompasses research in all aspects of rangeland management and utilization with a view to generate information toward provision of guidelines and inform policy.  Currently, this is being addressed together with KARI Research Centre at Marsabit.  Both on-farm and on-station research is undertaken.  The focus for on-farm activities is in the pastoral and agro-pastoral production systems, mainly in the larger Makueni, Taita-Taveta, Kajiado and Narok Districts (not taking into consideration the recent administrative subdivisions). (see Mandate area & position on map of Kenya)

Where we are
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) Kiboko Research Centre is situated about 2.3oS and 37.8oE, 1000 m above sea level on the foot of Mwailu Hill.  This is situated six (6) km off the road to the right, approximately 155 km South East of Nairobi along the Nairobi- Mombasa Highway. The turnoff at Kiboko Market is about 12 km before Makindu, the headquarters of the recently established Makindu District. The Centre is in Kasuvi Sub-Location of Kiboko Location within Makindu Division.  The Centre facility is surrounded by the Kyulu Hills Wildlife conservation to the South, agro-pastoral Kamba community to the North and East and the pastoral Maasai to the West. Previously, Kiboko was a hunting ground for licensed hunters of wild animals.
KARI Kiboko Research Centre is one of the KARI’s 22 research Centres strategically spread across the country.  Some of the KARI  Centres have one or more Sub-Centres. For the case of Kiboko there’s Buchuma sub centre located in Taita District approximately 60km beyond Voi towards Mombasa.
