Kabete: Shelmith Mwaniki
Shelmith Mwaniki holds a PhD in Agricultural Entomology. She is a Principal Research Scientist in Kenya Agricultural Research Institute and has an experience in crop protection of over 25 years. Her experience in Pest management includes biological control specializing in Entompathogenic nematode technology, conventional pesticides use, pesticide application, host plant resistance and quarantine. She gained great experience in quarantine aspects of crop protection while working with importers and exporters of agricultural plants where she ensured compliance with the international phytosanitary regulations in the early 90s. Her work has involved incorporation of appropriate technologies in an integrated approach for optimum pest management while minimizing risks resulting from some of these methods. She has trained several students and various visiting groups on pest management technologies and also supervised a number of post graduate students. She has worked with farmers to demonstrate the superiority of scientific pest management technologies over untested farmer practices in farmer field schools. She has taught economic entomology at the University of Nairobi and has an in-depth experience of arthropod pests of crops in East Africa. She has received a Norman Bolaug award of leadership in Agriculture and is a member of the Entomological society of Kenya, Horticultural association of Kenya (HAK) and Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture (KEPAWAE). Her works are reflected in various publications in the areas listed above.
