Doing business with KARI
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) provides a number of avenues through which the private and public sectors can conduct business and benefit from KARI products and services.
1. Technologies
KARI has a long history in the development of agricultural technologies that have had great socio-economic impact on the lives of Kenyans. The Hybrid 614 maize variety developed by KARI in1964 dominated the seeds market for over three decades transforming maize production into a major commercial and economic activity.
KARI has since, developed much better technologies with even much higher commercial potential in the following areas:
a) Crop technologies
There are currently many new crop varieties that have been developed by our breeders among all categories of crops like; Cereals (maize , wheat, sorghums and millets); legumes (beans, grams, cow peas, pigeon peas); Root crops (cassava, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes); Horticultural and Industrial crops ( Macadamia, Mangoes, Tissue culture bananas, avocados, pyrethrum) among others.
b) Livestock technologies
KARI continues to generate new technologies of commercial value in the livestock sub-sector including disease management products like vaccines and livestock breeds like the; Sahiwal ; Boran ; Frieshian ; Ayrshire ; Galla goats ; Dual purpose goats ; wool sheep (Corriedale and Hampshire down) among others.
There are many technologies that are ready for commercial development at the various KARI centres .
2. Licensing
The available technologies can be accessed for commercial exploitation through licensing agreements with KARI.
3. Consulting
KARI has a large multi-disciplinary team of over 550 agricultural scientists. Engaging with KARI on consultancy basis provides the small and large Agri-business, NGO’s and Farmers, with an opportunity to benefit from this pool of knowledge and expertise.
4. Contract Research
KARI is not only endowed with a multidisciplinary scientific human resource capability, but also with state of the art research facilities and equipments. Our contract research services can be tailored to suit specific projects and enable clients’ access the research capacities to address specific research and development issues.
5. Laboratory Analytical Services
KARI provides a wide range of laboratory analytical services on soils, water, animal feeds, animal disease diagnoses among others at our laboratories located at KARI Kabete, Thika, Muguga North and South, Embu and Kisii.
Our laboratories Kabete are in the process of accreditation to international standards of analytical services.
6. KARI MART
KARI Mart is the electronic market forum for the various products available at KARI centres . You can access these products at the stated KARI Centres, price and quantities as indicated in the mart.
